Dear
Church, Well, we
have turned the calendar to February, and I want you to make sure you take the
opportunity to read about Rev. Louis-Marie Parent OMI. He is featured in Sacred
Heart’s calendar because as a member of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate he is the
founder of the Oblate Missionaries of Mary Immaculate (OMMI) a secular institute
for women; and the founder of Voluntas Dei Secular Institute for priests, laymen
and women and married couples. I am a member of Voluntas Dei and proud that our
founder in featured in the calendar. Fr. Parent is still living and is
considered a saint; much like Mother Teresa was during her
lifetime. Today we
celebrate World Marriage Day and World Day of Consecrated Life. World Marriage
Day has been celebrated on the Second Sunday of February since 1981 (in
conjunction with Valentine’s Day) to celebrate the vocation of married life and
to ask God’s blessings on all those who are married. I’d like to
explain Consecrated life since it is not well known. T here are
three categories of Consecrated life. Most are familiar with “religious life” as
an aspect of Consecrated Life; made up of those living active, or apostolic and
contemplative life styles. Those living the apostolic life are involved in the
works of the church in education, health care, serving the poor, or assisting in
various ways in parishes, chanceries, or other ecclesial organizations.
Contemplative religious spend a major portion of their day in prayer separating
them from the world in order to pray for the needs of the Church and the world.
Contemplative women are called nuns, and the men, monks. The second
category of consecrated life is Secular Institutes, as is Voluntas Dei. We, too,
profess the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity and obedience. The
difference from religious life is that members of secular institutes usually do
no live together or share an apostolate, although some do, but rather seek to
make sacred the secular world in which they live and work. The third
category of Consecrated life similar to religious institutes and is often
mistaken for them is “societies of apostolic life.” Among societies of apostolic
life which are well-known in the United States are the Daughters of Charity,
Maryknoll, Sulpicians, and Vincentians. Today as a
Universal Church, we celebrate Marriage and Consecrated Life. May we raise up in
prayer all those who are wonderful examples of commitment to God and each other
in a powerful way. Together we are Church! Fr.
Bill MEN’S RETREAT: Plans are underway for the Annual
Men’s Retreat being held at LaSalette Retreat Center on the weekend of February
27th-March 1st, 2009. God calls us to unite in brotherhood and our shared
retreat will fulfill God’s calling. If you are interested or have any questions,
call Michael Matondi at 508-478-0897. Volunteers Needed - Wheels for the
World:
Wheels for
the World, is a ministry of Joni and Friends which collects, restores and
distributes unused wheelchairs, walkers, canes and crutches to the disabled
world wide, ( www.joniandfriends.org). Wheels for the World has been active in New England for over
4 years. We are in desperate need of volunteers who can pick up
wheelchairs, etc; store them, or bring them to Hopkinton.
Our crucial
need is in the Metro West, Central MA, Western MA, and Cape Cod
areas. Volunteers
would
need to be
able to pick up and store multiple items until the MA Chair Corps Rep, Paul
Kohler can get them or they can meet him in Hopkinton. Please
prayerfully consider becoming involved in this crucial ministry and help us
give the "gift of
mobility" to the
disabled world wide. For more info contact Cindy Leonard, Wheels for the World
New England Regional Coordinator at 508-653-3743.
