Dear Church,
The
food insecurity crisis in Haiti is hitting the press and TV news a great deal
these days. Many of you are wondering
how situations like this could ever occur.
Some have asked why Haiti can’t take care of itself. Food insecurity is nothing new in Haiti or in
the Third World, and the crisis in most situations is impacted beyond the
boarders of underdeveloped countries.
For example, because we want cut flowers all year long many southern
hemispheric countries grow flowers to sell to the US, using land that could
produce food. Wealthy land owners can
make more selling flowers than producing food for hungry bellies. It is a very complex system, but I think you
get the idea.
I
know the situation in Haiti, because I lived and worked there for many
years. I watched as situations unfolded
and felt as powerless for Haiti as I sometimes do right now as we continue as a
country to believe that we can solve international problems by going to war
rather than through diplomatic means.
For
those of you who have asked why Haiti can’t feed itself, I can give you an
update on the most resent events that have caused Haitian farmers to stop
growing food for Haiti. In order for
Haiti to have trade with other nations it has had to comply with Structural
Adjustment Programs (SAP) placed on them by outside influences. Precious farm land was turned into Industrial
Parks where Foreign Factories were built, many clothing factories were set up,
along with companies with familiar names like Spalding and 3M. These factories in the 1980’s were paying
Haitians 11 cents US per hour to make the Pocahontas pajamas sold at Wal-Mart
for $7.77.
In
the meantime, with free trade (not Fair trade) Haiti was flooded with “Miami
Rice” produced by US farmers who were subsidized by our tax dollars. The
Haitian rice was more expensive to produce so it undercut Haitian farmers and
put them out of business. As soon as
there was no competition for domestic rice, the cost of “Miami Rice” has
skyrocketed. This puts Haiti and many
other underdeveloped countries in the situation they are in today.
Our
immediate response is “charity” collecting food and money to prevent further
starvation. This is only a very short
term response. In the depths of my
heart, I personally feel called to speak out about the injustice that has brought
this about. I am looking to spend my
energies being a voice for the voiceless, helping people move from misery to
poverty with dignity.
Happy last day of Easter
Fr. Bill
